Data on the prevalence, morphological, biological and physiological characteristics of the diamondback moth Plutella xylostella (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) – a dangerous pest of cabbage crops, are presented. The taxonomic position of the phytophage is indicated, and the characteristic symptoms of plant damage are described. The reasons for the increase in the harmfulness and economic importance of the diamondback moth in Russia and around the world are noted. The influence of species and varietal characteristics of plants, entomophages and entomopathogens on the number of phytophage is considered. The range of chemical insecticides recommended for controlling the number of diamondback moths in the Russian Federation is indicated. An increase in resistance to chemicals and certain entomopathogens in P. xylostella populations in different regions of the world is recorded. The possibility of using pheromone traps as a method with sufficiently high accuracy for detecting and accounting for diamondback moths has been established.
